21st Century, meet George Jetson...3d printing has arrived! Well, sort of - it's true, you can buy a desktop machine that "prints" objects, not pictures of objects but real hold in your hand things. It works like an inkjet printer using anything that can be squeezed through a syringe, plastic, metal, chocolate... . For now there are limits to what it can manufacture, simple objects like cups and geometric shapes, but according to the techies someday we'll be able to print live babies right on the desktop. Creative types are already making and selling artful artifacts...jewelry, mobius strips and figurines...high art?...that's taste, classical, modern or the primitive scratchings on a piece of ochre are categories for curators...for me art is about the content and context. Point is, give a Homo sapiens new technology and the first thing he does with it is create a metaphor.
Where does this drive come from? Why must we put our visions out there? We have been doing it for at least 70,000 years. Is it an attempt to impose order on a chaotic world, or to come to grips with our irrational selves? Is the figure of the tortured artist a myth? Is creation fueled by extremes of angst and mania? Is art a form of madness? No, I think that notion is a mirage. Crazed artists? ...van Gogh slicing off an ear, Michael Angelo hurling a hammer at the Moses statue, "Why won't you speak to me?". These are artists in search of a metaphor. When it is found the slicing and throwing stop and the creating begins. The act of creating is not madness, it is freedom from the irrational, it is the calm in the eye of high anxiety.
Creativity as antidote is release, freedom to choose metaphor, form and content for your vision. There are about 7 billion visions out there...a chaos of creative energy, mothering a countless array of metaphors for existence...what the Chinese call Wu Chi. It is begginingless, it is endless it is the mother of all things...Wu Chi is the vaccine against the malaise of meaninglessness - it is the proliferation of meaning. From scratchings on a rock to desktopping the new Moses is a long hard trip filled with high anxiety...Wu Chi everybody.
That's all I have for now.
