Well, this thing has spun out of control and I am just going to wave my hands in the air like a giant flapping ass and say sorry to anyone who feels cheated. The blog will continue to be random, (in?)coherent and unstable for the for the time being. I am leaving the original purpose statement below for now. I still believe in it and want to use this space to promote Humanism but right now I am just spinning pointlessly and need to sort myself out. So look for more of the same or, turn away in disgust Oh, and if no one is reading this turgid mess anyway then nevermind. If you do read the blog please stay tuned and patient...
Welcome all persons, races, creeds, genders and species. I hope to foster free and open discussion regarding the ideas, ideals, values, goals and actions in the universe of Secular Humanism. Science, religion, belief, skeptcism, ethics, values and all things human are the grist for this mill.
Maybe this will be the start of something more than just another blog. Looking to the future I would like to become part of a larger, dynamic Secular Humanist movement. The philosophers Peter Singer, Austen Dacey and Philip Kitcher have suggested in their books that Secular Humanism is in danger of losing its heart. The battle against religious fundamentalism has diverted our attention and energies from the projects which could actually make this world a better place to live a life. Through building partnerships with existing Humanist action groups or helping to create new ones the goal is to find ways to get more boots on the ground. One of the strengths of religious organizations is their ability to provide actual services to people in need. As Humanists we need to find ways to make similar connections in our communities and the world at large. Religion as an idea is powerful in the world because of the work that is done by religious institutions at all levels of society. It's more than proselytizing, lobbying and praying; it's about funding for faith based initiatives, it's about feeding, educating and providing medical services to people in need. Humanists can foster groups, actions and ideas to compete with religion on the ground, where humans live. So bring your thoughts, ideas and ruminations to the table. Also bring your real world connections and help foster a network of action oriented Humanists.
