Where does this drive come from? Why must we put our visions out there? We have been doing it for at least 70,000 years. Is it an attempt to impose order on a chaotic world, or to come to grips with our irrational selves? Is the figure of the tortured artist a myth? Is creation fueled by extremes of angst and mania? Is art a form of madness? No, I think that notion is a mirage. Crazed artists? ...van Gogh slicing off an ear, Michael Angelo hurling a hammer at the Moses statue, "Why won't you speak to me?". These are artists in search of a metaphor. When it is found the slicing and throwing stop and the creating begins. The act of creating is not madness, it is freedom from the irrational, it is the calm in the eye of high anxiety.
Creativity as antidote is release, freedom to choose metaphor, form and content for your vision. There are about 7 billion visions out there...a chaos of creative energy, mothering a countless array of metaphors for existence...what the Chinese call Wu Chi. It is begginingless, it is endless it is the mother of all things...Wu Chi is the vaccine against the malaise of meaninglessness - it is the proliferation of meaning. From scratchings on a rock to desktopping the new Moses is a long hard trip filled with high anxiety...Wu Chi everybody.
That's all I have for now.
